I didn't feel bad but ashamed.
While the country is talking about self-reliance a few of the very basic problems are still to be sorted. People expect, curse and blame government for their plight. I witnessed hundreds of posts in last few days, those suggested "Govt. has failed". I don't disagree with the voices. Our emotions control our reactions and as fellow Indians we get agitated-its a pretty normal behaviour.
While questioning the govt. I started to question my self, what is the root cause and how could people fails these people. We have people migrating from all over the country to mostly their villages. These are almost 10% of the 6.5 Crore who were doing labour jobs. They are leaving because most of the people refused to pay them, employ them and support them. They are proud and hardworking people of India and will not depend on alms for a longer period. We are raised in India to have pride in our lives-irrespective of who we are, what our circumstances are and however difficult the times may be. WE LIVE WITH PRIDE. These brothers and sisters of mine are hardworking-independent people. They chose to leave because we chose to ignore...its us who failed them.
Now what is the solution? As a consultant I think the main reason of no help reaching them is lack of data about these labourers. A person born and registered in some part of UP has reached here in Chandigarh and neither UP nor Punjab knows where he is at what point of time. There must be a system to assist and control this flow of unskilled-migrant labourers. They all know how to use WhatsApp now and we can build a system/software/App or portal where they can update their location-address-present place of work. In case we have it, it will be very simple to locate-support-transport with ease.
The Govt. works like a typical system, you have to follow rules, manage red tape and federal structure to distribute relief or any other scheme. I suggest all the states to have their own portals where people can register themselves and inform they are leaving for which destination and when they arrive they can update their address and place of work. Or else we can bring back the old school "Employment Exchanges". The farmers of Punjab can simply apply on UP or Bihar govt. portals and ask for labour. No one will have to stand on railway stations with placards or get troubled, it will be easy.
This tragedy must not be forgotten with social media activism. There must come realistic solutions and I must not see any of my fellow India suffering.
Tears are the beginning of a revolution!
Note: In no case I am suggesting enslaving people through data. Registration of the data must be optional and if some one does not register he/she by default loses the right to complain.
